A Travellerspoint blog

sunny 24 °C

After my flight disaster I arrived in my hostel in Melbourne in the early afternoon. It looked great, nice reception and great bar, but I am in a 10 dorm! Bloody PeterPans, never let them book my accomodation! But at least it's all clean! I think demands are sinking lower and lower! Amazing! :-)
As I was quite hung over, I was quite happy to find out that my friend Evelyn wasn't able to make it that day as she had a work do in the evening, so I set off myself to explore the city.
I started at Federation Square, which is great with all its glas and steel buildings. I went to the Yara river where they had a festival on with a water skiing jumping competition. Wow! Quite cool! and did then a walk from the LonelyPlanet through the city and immediately fell in love with it. It's a really cool place and has so much more atmosphare to it. There is a real buzz in the city and I love it. Especially all the tiny little lanes which have so many cafes and restaurants squeezed in, just brilliant! It also seems so much more relaxed than Sydney. People are just chilling out on the square or in one of the many little cafes and it's just not as hectic. Maybe I just needed a bit more time in Sydney but for now I have to say I prefer Melbourne.
I had a brilliant day! One of the things I have noticed here, that I actually really like spending time by myself and quite often really need that. Just one of things I have figured out so far...:-)
It probably helped that the weather was good. Not that warm, I think only 24 C but not a single cloud in the sky which seems like a novelty to me at the moment!
On my second day I walked even more and went to the Paraments House, several cathedrals and churches and to Chinatown, where I stopped for lunch. I then headed to Queen Victoria Market to the famous Brunswick Street, but I couldn't see why it was so famous.... and after that met Evelyn at Flinders Station. She brought another friend, Lauren, an Aussie moving to Holland. We spent the afteroon by the river, chatting and watching the competion, went to the Botanical Gardens, which were amazing. Apparently they are one of the best and went then for dinner and drinks to Lauren's place.
All in all, great time in Melbourne and now I am having another very early start at 6.30 to leave for the Great Ocean Road, another 3 day trip!
